The 1995 merger of the Lockheed Corporation and the Martin Marietta Corporation united two of the oldest companies in aviation, with both of the companies having been founded well before World War I. In 1909, one of aviations earliest pioneers, Glenn Martin, founded the Glenn L. Martin Company. In 1961, the Glenn L. Martin Company merged with the American-Marietta Corporation, creating the Martin Marietta Corporation. Allan and Malcolm Loughead founded the Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company in 1912. The company was reorganized under the name of the Lockheed Corporation in 1932. Both companies have played important roles in aviation history. |
