The progress of aviation, as with any other field, has always depended upon a continuous occurrence of technological innovations and developments. Some of the great historical developments in aviation such as radio navigation, the jet engine, and supersonic flight were among the many catalysts that helped shape the course of aviation history. But history, of course, is always in the making, and the technological achievements that will contribute to tomorrows history are todays innovations. And there are a number of cutting-edge developments and innovations in progress today that are quite interesting. History has sifted out past developments that turned out to be less significant than might have been predicted, and without that benefit it can be difficult to forecast which of todays developments will have a major impact upon the future.
