A type rating is required for the pilot-in-command of aircraft having a maximum take-off weight in excess of 12,500 pounds, and for all turbojet powered airplanes regardless of the take-off weight. A type rating is applicable only to a specific aircraft. Acquiring a type rating for a Boeing 737, for example, will require ground and flight training focused only on Boeing 737s. Once earned, the type rating for a Boeing 737 would not be applicable to a Boeing 727, or to any other aircraft, regardless of the similarity to a 737. The training curriculum for a type certificate, as well as the cost, is fully dependant upon the particular aircraft for which the type rating is being sought. Type ratings are also required of pilots serving as second-in-command of an aircraft that is certified for a crew of at least two pilots. Additionally, the FAA administrator has the authority to require a type certificate for other aircraft which do not otherwise meet any of the requirements for requiring a type certificate. |
