Seaplane Rating

A seaplane rating is required for piloting an aircraft which has the ability to operate from water. Both single-engine and multi-engine seaplane ratings are available.

An applicant for a seaplane rating must pass a practical examination. The practical examination is administered by an FAA examiner, and consists of an oral test and a flight test.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a seaplane rating, a pilot must hold at least a private certificate with an airplane rating.

Flight Training

There is no minimum requirement for total flight hours logged for a seaplane rating. There is also no requirement for a minimum number of hours of seaplane training.

Cost of Obtaining a Seaplane Rating

The estimated cost of a single-engine seaplane rating would be roughly $1000. The estimated cost for a multi-engine seaplane rating would be a minimum of $2500.
